COMMENT 2005-01. Developers are again faced with two significant rendering schemes to accommodate when building websites. After two years of relative stability designing for the known dysfunctions of Internet Explorer, now they welcome browsers, led by Firefox, that are effectively compliant with W3C standards. Evolution resumes as it becomes satisfying to build according to the promulgated standards of style and layout.

Sadly, IE sits astride the installed base with major, layout-killing aberrations, and no hope for change since Microsoft now declines to upgrade versions earlier than the XP operating system. One school of thought holds that this is deliberate "poison pill" obstruction, although to believe this one would have to think that Microsoft was a jealous and monopolistic company.
