Website owners generally know their own field well, rather than being experts about the Web. Most people can give us a short list of key words that are commonly used all the time in their field. But suprisingly, when we use these words to search on the Web, in practice we find again and again that they come up short in finding the field we're looking for.

We find other words that work better, and we find combinations of words that work especially well. And we begin to find those words that searchers are actually using to try to find the particular field, and this is always full of suprises.

In our working experience (which extends from 1995) this has always been the case. The lesson is, start with the words you think matter, and do the work of research, and be prepared for surprises. The words you think matter are often not the words they think matter.

There is no point in perfoming any of the techniques of search engine optimization, or conducting any of the campaigns of traffic building, without first doing serious, structured keyword research.
