Us Chickens and Those Telcos

Cringely touches a nerve common to us all this week talking about those telcos and their prices, and their lousy bandwidth (and don’t even ask about service).

Ten years ago, the United States had the fastest and cheapest residential Internet service in the world. Today U.S. residential Internet service, especially broadband, is among the slowest and most expensive. - When Elephants Dance

Cringely thinks change is afoot, and all the better for us the customers, saying “Get ready for a substantially faster and somewhat cheaper Internet.” I hope he’s right that a bit of a price war is coming - but this is a dark age for free markets inside the US.

We’ll stay tuned, next week he proposes to supply more background analysis - I’m interested to see exactly where the fix was put in with this free ride the telcos have been enjoying.
